Kilkenny Launches Ambitious Summer River Festival Series
Kilkenny LEADER Partnership (KLP) is proud to announce, the Three Sisters Festival Network a unique group of river festivals to occur this summer in nine river towns and villages of the county. Over the June to September period the communities, who are situated on the Barrow, Nore and Suir river system, will host a series of regattas of traditional water sport events, with a central feature of each regatta being a competitive contest between the communities racing cots- the native boats of the region. Each cot will be built by the communities themselves and they will be competing over the summer league series for the Barrow Nore Suir Perpetual Trophy.
KLP’s intention in organising the festival series is to promote increased awareness in the county of its rich traditions of river culture and thereby encourage the development of the tourism potential of Kilkenny’s Three Sister Rivers. Communities and visitors are invited to join in the festivities and support their river heroes as well as making the most of the rich cultural heritage of Kilkenny’s Rivers
Plans are underway for events both in and out of the water with boat cot racing and river sport events to family fun days and workshops focusing on river biodiversity. The communities of Thomastown, Inistioge, Bennetsbridge, Ballyragget, Goresbridge, Callan, Graiguenamanagh, Fiddown and Rosbercon will be the stage for the river festival programme and hosts for its own unique and vibrant community events.
