The Irish Conker Championships
You have been to the various festivals during the summer, where music, art and comedy have been consumed. Its all been very nice and you feel that your culture quota has been topped up. Now after a summer of artistic indulgence its time for a festival that involves some real effort! There's been quite enough sitting back and pondering at the meaning of things. Just get into the ring, put on a competitors bib and play the great game of Conkers!
You know the routine, you come to Freshford, Co. Kilkenny, pretending to just want a look at the event, but pretty soon your competitive instincts get the better of you. You know the kids are enjoying their competitions, but you just want the adult games to begin so that you can take your place in the arena, stare down your opponent and show them how it's really done. Sure you've sampled the mulled wine and great food and crafts in stalls that encircle the picturesque village green in Freshford, but enough distractions! You just want your moment of glory!
Before you know it your number has been called and pretty soon, you have made it through a few rounds and you're a finalist, with your sights set on victory. The day ends with all of your family and friends cheering for you as you stand on the podium giving your victory speech. Everyone has had a great day and you are the hero, the victor and the King or Queen of Irish Conkering!

This is a national competition and is open to anyone from 8yrs of age, with no upper age limit!
