We Are Suddenly Somewhere Else

Bridget O'Gorman

27th April  - 9th June 2013

Places of this kind are outside of all places, even though it may be possible to indicate their location in reality.

The Butler Gallery is delighted to present a collection of new and existing object- and lens-based works by Bridget O'Gorman. In the exhibition We Are Suddenly Somewhere Else, O'Gorman invites the viewer to interact with a series of open-ended narratives related to place - or rather an experience of it.

Linking poetic, philosophical, historical or eyewitness account with contemporary site, O'Gorman makes installations using a range of media from photographic or moving image, food to utilitarian materials such as silver or bone china. Occasionally slipping into the structure of a semi-fictional, museum-like display (using vinyl text, found object, reference documentation and plinth) those narratives act as indicators, highlighting the importance of the viewer's individual and past experience in connection with the subject.

In addition to re-imagining existing work, O'Gorman has created a new installation for the Butler Gallery based upon it's future site - Evans Home.  The artist projects imagery of the gallery's future site in its current state of dereliction. The accompanying soundscape denotes a human presence, still hanging in the air - along with the suggestion that something is about to happen. Originally an almshouse for 'decayed servants', the transitional spaces - thresholds, hallways and stairwells - of this 19th century building, itself in a state of transition, are revealed, allowing the audience a glimpse of the remnants of it's recent history as a domestic asylum and a library store. Capturing strong traces of it's former use as an institution, the installation prompts a recognition of the significance of this past for the present, including the role of the gallery as a potential catalyst for communicating alternative perspectives; for making the 'private' public.

In works entitled Neither Here Nor There and Sketches for Faraway Places, O'Gorman explores another tangent where re-enactments and places (both physical and psychological) are imagined, described or reinterpreted. Drawing from historical documentation and account, the installation references local historian Edward J. Law's research on William Grace - a 19th century character whose fate was connected with Evans Home. Using stereoscopic and double imagery of seascapes from varying perspectives, the work speculates upon duality, displacement and upon the simultaneous desire to be - or imposition of being - somewhere else.

About the artist

Bridget O'Gorman graduated with a BA in Fine Art Painting from the Crawford College of Art in 2003. In 2008, she completed an MFA between the Department of Applied Art and The School of Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. Her work has been supported through awards from The Crafts Council of Ireland, The Arts Council of Ireland, the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers London, the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, The Bank of Ireland and Kilkenny County Council's Arts Office. O'Gorman was the recipient of the 2010 Emerging Visual Artist Award from the Wexford Arts Centre where she also had a solo exhibition. Selected group exhibitions include Claremorris Open 2011 curated by Chris Hammond and 'Re-set' selected by Emma-Lucy O'Brien at VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art, Carlow.

The artist would like to acknowledge the Cork Film Centre, the Artist-In-Residence programme at the National Sculpture Factory supported by Cork Arts Support Team, and the assistance of Fire Station Artists' Studios through their Digital Media Award Sept-Dec 2012.

With grateful thanks to The Arts Council for essential annual funding and to the OPW, FÁS, The Heritage Council, and the Kilkenny Local Authorities for additional assistance.

Richard Mosse: The Enclave | Pavilion of Ireland at the 55th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia | June 1 - November 24, 2013

Richard Mosse will represent Ireland at the 55th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia with The Enclave, a major multi-media installation. Throughout 2012, Mosse and collaborators Trevor Tweeten and Ben Frost traveled to Eastern Congo and inserted themselves as journalists within armed rebel groups. Using discontinued infrared film – originally developed for military reconnaissance – that registers the greens of the Congo as lurid shades of pink, fuchsia and purple,

Mosse reveal a cancerous yet unseen humanitarian tragedy with a disturbing psychedelic palette, posing aesthetic questions in a situation of profound human suffering.

Please find the press release here.

The Commissioner and Curator is Anna O'Sullivan and the exhibition is an initiative of Culture Ireland and the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon. The 55th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia will be on view from June 1 through November 24, 2013, with vernissage days on May 29 through 31.

Design Intelligence - Living With Design & Making Things Better

24 May 2013 – 9 July 2013

Living With Design

The Malthouse Design Centre invites you to share in the story of everyday objects as seen through the eyes of a selection of Ireland’s design professionals in Living with Design.

Imagining and designing for the future, designers give shape to something that did not exist before. Every designer aspires to be a step closer to a better world leading to a happier, more beautiful and intelligent existence. For Living with Design, renowned Irish design professional have been invited to present beautifully designed objects that hold a personal value or sentiment, they are objects that are familiar as well as unexpected, and objects that have revolutionized daily lives or a particular way of thinking. Each object has an individual story as told by the designer, the enhancement of their daily lives as a result is evidenced by the visible wear and tear of the object.

Through the Living with Design exhibition, The Malthouse Design Centre would like to introduce the wider public to the value of design and how by choosing beautiful design it can benefit and enhance our lives. The designers have been photographed by Lois Crighton with these objects. According to Rosemary Ryan, Business Development Manager for the Malthouse, Living with Design is a snapshot in time of the lives of Irish designers, their sources of inspiration and the objects that can engage and intrigue us. The objects which the designers have chosen range from an Eileen Gray table, a simple but different Danish spoon, a Blá Eld -  Blue Fire Swedish ceramic tea set to a contemporary designed lamp stand and carved wood serving platter by Holly Tornheim. Each item unique and special with a story to tell.

Making Things Better

Design is always about making things better – even when the starting point is standing on the shoulders of giants. In partnership with the Royal Irish Academy, we’ve asked Designgoat and Derek Wilson to each select an inspirational object from A History of Ireland in 100 Objects and lead us through their design processes from initial selection, via trials, errors and sketches, to a finished prototype that speaks as eloquently about contemporary Ireland as the 100 Objects do of our past.

Hole in the wall upstairs

Hole in the Wall

The Hole in the Wall, Kilkenny's renowned 16th century tavern. It is housed in the oldest surviving townhouse in Ireland - the 1582 Archer Inner House, 17 High St. Fully restored over the past 10 years the Elizabethan building with its tavern, snug and Archer room are now open to visitors for the first time in hundreds of years.

Tours currently take place on the weekends and evenings that describe the story of the house against the backdrop of the complex history of political and religious change in Kilkenny over the past 400 years.

The house is wonderful to explore with its surviving 16th century features. The tavern evokes the time when the Duke of Wellington and other notables were nightly habitués and the Charitable and Benevolent snug tells of links to 1916 and other notable events.

If you are looking for somewhere to hold a conference, re-union, reception or meeting (or even a wedding), the Inner House of the Archer Mansion and Hole in the Wall is the place. It is available also for classical and traditional music, small acoustic concerts as well as debates, theatre, poetry etc. The natural acoustics are excellent and there is an in-built state of the art sound system.

Rothe House is a unique Irish merchant's townhouse, built between 1594 and 1610. The property comprises three houses, three enclosed courtyards and a large garden. John Rothe, who was a wealthy merchant and landowner in Kilkenny, built the first house in 1594 and as his family grew (to 12 children) he built the second and third houses.

The property is now owned by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, and is home to their large collection of artefacts relating to Kilkenny city and county. The garden to the rear of the house has been reconstructed to reflect a typical 17th century garden of the period. It measures ½ an acre approximately, and is made up of two enclosed spaces, with a large Orchard to the west beside the City Wall, and a pleasure garden and vegetable beds to the east beside the House.

There is a genealogical service at Rothe House, using the extensive database of Kilkenny city and county records compiled by the Society. There is also an online Family History Service available at www.kilkenny.brsgenealogy.com

Rothe House is open to the public and to group tours daily and it also hosts events and receptions in the unique 16th century surroundings.
