Castlecomer Discovery Park is nested in the charming and tranquil village of Castlecomer and is less than 20km away from Kilkenny city and just 30 minutes from M7, M8 and M9 motorways. 

Castlecomer Discovery Park adventures includes it famous walk through the treetops, with views of the River Deane below. For the more adventurous, we have Ireland’s longest, over water, zip-line (300 meters), or try the Octagon, our high ropes challenge course. The Park comprises 80 acres of natural woodland and lakes. It opened to the public in 2007 to commemorate the coal-mining heritage following the closure of the local mines in 1969. It aims to develop rural tourism, generate local employment and regenerate the town. Castlecomer Discovery Park offers an exciting range of activities around the estate including tree top walks, climbing walls, boating, adventure playgrounds, orienteering and most recently Ireland’s longest zip wire and high ropes challenge. At the hub of the site, there is the Irish Mining Museum, a purpose-built cafe, craft village, and spaces for educational activities. 

Castlecomer Discovery Park comprises 80 acres of natural woodland and lakes. It opened to the public in 2007 to commemorate the coal-mining heritage following the closure of the local mines in 1969. It aims to develop rural tourism, generate local employment and regenerate the town.

Cásca sa Choill,
our Easter family celebration!
24 th March to 8 th April 2018

Time to celebrate! The gorgeous snowdrops are peeking up and the evenings are getting
nice and long. Castlecomer Discovery Park is open for the 2018 season each weekend from
the 17 th March, but we have two full weeks of active fun from the 24 th March to the 8 th of
April to celebrate the arrival of Spring and Easter holidays!

The ever popular Easter Woodland Hunt is back again, our Easter themed woodland trail
takes families around our 80 acres of woodlands and lakes, bringing you through the
magical elf and fairy village as you hunt for clues. Suitable for children up to 10, this is the
perfect way to get a day of fresh air and screen free fun. Of course there is a reward for all
your hard detective work, once you have gathered all the clues make your way back to the
visitor centre to collect your goodies. The trail is available every day for the Easter holidays
and is €10 per family.

Join us on Saturday March 31 st for Cásca sa Choill as we celebrate craft and the natural
world in our quirky event domes located at the Elf and Fairy Village.
Get to meet the makers
as we have wood turners, potters, knitters and jewellery makers amongst those that will give
demonstrations of their crafts. They will be joined by a number of groups that promote
biodiversity and embrace the natural world such as the Mid Kilkenny Bee Keepers
Association. Did you know that eating honey can help you smarter! Find out this and much
more by join us for this free family friendly event, taking place between 12.00 – 16.00 on
Easter Saturday.

For those looking for an adrenaline rush, get up in the clouds and get a birds eye view of the
world with our Tree Top Walk course nestled in the Sycamore tree tops! This stunning tree
top walk is 140 metre long and gives views around the 70 acre natural woodland park. For
those over 12 years of age there is Ireland’s longest zip line, which is 300 metres long and
over 35 metres over ground
at its highest point. Zoom down the zip after trying your skills on
our high-ropes course called the Octagon. Our younger climbers love the Junior Woodland
Adventure Course
, which see children navigate a number of obstacles that promote physical
and mental agility.

We have got something for everyone, with 6km of walking trails, woodland orienteering trails,
pedal boats, canoes, archery, climbing wall
or our fascinating interactive coal mining
exhibition telling the story of the local mining heritage. You can also relax over a hearty meal
or tasty snack at our “Canopy Café” under the trees at the elf village. Then take a walk
around the craft yard, where you can meet the craft makers and find a novel gift.

Paddle around 

Find a paddle buddy and take to the water for some fun filled leisurely boating activities in our stunning natural woodlands Lake. Admire the beautiful backdrop, filled with a variety of magnificent trees and our recently renovated 17th century stone bridge.

Zip Lining & Tree Top Walks 

Conquer your fear and discover your inner climber in a series of complicated rope walkways. Walk high above the Sycamore tree tops, 10 metres above the ground as you grapple with each new challenge while also catching a glimpse of the spectacular birds-eye view of the park

Craft Shops

Mum and Dad can sip on coffee’s and wander around our beautiful handful of craftsmanship shops, from Carl Parker Jewels to Rosmarie Durr pottery you will be astounded by each and every beautiful piece designed and carefully constructed.

Why not take a hike, have a picnic or explore the many winding and adventurous paths through the natural setting of the woodlands? Castlecomer Discovery Park offers the perfect place to get fit, experience nature and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether it’s a quick stroll or something a little more challenging, we’ve got it all! 


Step back in time and experience an interactive multi-media coal mining display that takes you on a journey through time. Explore 300 years of coal mining history through the use of life-sized reconstructions of prehistoric animals, plants, video clips, information panels, while experiencing prehistoric life in the coal swamps.


Team Building 

“A successful team is a group of many hands but of one mind”!! Fancy a challenge?  We’ve got plenty of fun filled, activity based and educational challenges available for group bonding sessions. From Orienteering, to conquering height fears we’ve got an array of challenges for your group to choose.  

Primary and Secondary School Programme(s)
Students will use both indoor and outdoor spaces to learn and have fun by participating in a variety of activities, experiments and team tasks from curriculum-oriented programmes.

The park is a social/community enterprise operating on a Non Profit basis. It’s supported by
volunteers from the local community, and governed by a board of voluntary directors. Any profit is re-
directed to developing the park.
